“Tactile stimulation” or love and gentleness?

The just-born baby should be handled gently to help him better adapt to extra-uterine life. Rough handling and quick movements can “shock” babies and may cause them to cry before their lungs have cleared of fluid. Stimulation to cry before physiological lung expansion may result in uneven filling and may contribute to respiratory distress or Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTN; a temporary condition of mild to moderate respiratory difficulty, rapid, effort-full breathing, moist lungs. The old name for this is “wet lung syndrome”). It’s even possible that the newborn may be sensitive to emotional or psychological damage from the sudden shock of birth. It usually easy for us to make birth gentler for the baby, and it seems a humane thing to do so.
To reduce unnecessary stimulus as he is born, the baby should be guided into his mother’s arms and observed. He should not be touched, manipulated, jiggled, or rubbed by others– but simply held gently by his mother (let her stroke or rub him if she wishes). Ideally, the room should be darkened, and attendants should try to speak quietly, so that the newborn hears only his family’s voices.
